PHD Researcher--Wen C.Y. Nivala 許晴晏

Wen Nivala was awarded her first degree of BSc in Electronic Communication Engineering and MSc degree in Physics from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. In addition, she had been working as a senior chip-designer/engineer over 5 years.

The industries experiences induces her interest in user-centred design and therefore her research turned to the engagement of end-users and designers due to the motivation. Now her research interest focuses on empathic design, user research, personas and emotional design.

Education

1)De Monfort University, Leicester, UK -- PHD in Product Design and Innovation (Current study)
2)National Chiao Tung University (1999-2001), Taiwan--MSc in Physics
3)National Chiao Tung University (1996-1999), Taiwan--BSc in Electronic Communication Engineering

Work Experiences

The current job is doing the user research for the PHD study as well as the consultancy work in
the embedded software company.

1)Embedded Software (Apr 2009~ ), Software Consultant
2)Aeromax Technology (June 2007- Apr 2008), Consultant
3)Mediatek (Nov 2003 - Nov2006), Senior System Engineer
4)Realtek Semiconductor (Aug 2001 - Nov 2003), System Engineer

Research Area

The research area is based on the user-centred design and the earlier stage of design. She focuses on the investigation of user behaviour by which brings the rich-information to designers.
The tools she usually use are Personas and Empathic skills.

In this area she published:
1)The development of a conceptual model in user research using an empathic design technique as the basis for user-centred design, in Proceedings of 3rd IASDR 2009 on Design, Rigor & Relevance
2) A systematic evaluation approach for study of human performance of body-based interfaces, in Proceedings of the 2007 Symposium on Digital Life Technologies-Building a Safe, Secured and Sound (3S) Living Environment, Tainan, Taiwan R.O.C., 212-217.
